Dr. Tapia, who was recently named a recipient of the National Medal of Science by President Obama, will give the Inaugural Lecture in the University of Illinois' Presidential Lecture on Diversity series, on October 10, 2011. His talk will focus on higher education and the need for new leadership and ideas to face its current crisis. He will draw upon his experience developing the educational outreach programs that led to Rice University becoming a national leader in producing women and underrepresented minority Ph.D. recipients in the mathematical sciences.
