Jennifer McCombs, a senior policy advisory at the Rand Corporation, describes a new study she just conducted on the issue of “summer learning loss” which some students experience during summer vacation. The report, called ‘Making Summer Count,’ states that summer learning loss is real and cumulative, with primarily low-income children losing as much as one month of literacy skills every summer, but the good news is that is can be prevented through summer learning programs offered by school districts, or even by taking part in a summer reading program offered by their local public library.
