A new report released Monday by the Pew Research Center and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation reveals that while Americans still turn to television to retrieve local news and information, they are relying increasingly more on a variety of platforms, depending on the subject matter and their age. In fact, most Americans use a blend of new and traditional sources to get information. According to the report, “the picture revealed by the data is that of a richer and more nuanced ecosystem of community news and information than researchers have previously identified.”
The data from the report shows that 64% of American adults rely on at least three different types of media to retrieve local news and information, with 15% of American adults using at least six. Overall, the study raises a key question: if a medium were to disappear, would local information go unobserved?
