What happens when we decide to opt out of the responsibilities of citizenship? What does it mean to choose a private option exempted from a public system â€" a special line at the airport, a private school instead of a public one, health care for one rather than for all? Brown University political theorist Bonnie Honig examines contemporary instances of “opting out,” asking whether these moments are acts of resistance or forms of privilege, and investigating historical precedents from Thoreau’s refusal to pay taxes to Antigone’s rejection of her entire community.

Tickets $5-$12.
