Urban education reform focuses heavily on systems change, such as charter schools versus traditional schools or Common Core learning standards versus less rigorous standards. What gets far less attention are the ways in which poverty, violence and trauma prevent children from absorbing what schools have to offer. This session will examine how those factors profoundly affect learning. We’ll also consider new, promising methods to reorient schools to confront these problems. Guests: A Chicago Public Schools principal and social worker who successfully organized their schools to nurture social, emotional and academic growth.
